Magic Mouse
October 31st, 2009
A family member got a Magic Mouse so I had some time to play around with it.

Here are my thoughts:
- Step 1 – Go to System Preferences and enable right click. Duh.
- Left and right click work perfectly, unlike the Mighty Mouse which I never could get to work reliably. You won’t mis-click with the new mouse.
- There are no buttons, but the whole mouse does physically move and click, so it feels right.
- The
twoone-finger vertical swipe to scroll vertically works well. - I do not like the two-finger horizontal swipe gesture. This makes your browser go back and forward. The problem is, the entire mouse moves when I swipe horizontally. So I have to awkwardly hold the mouse while trying to contort my fingers…it’s not good.
- For me, the mouse is far too dainty and tiny. Women and children will love this mouse. Men with big hands might be better served by a Logitech mouse.
I don’t agree about the side swipe : it feels really natural to me, and can go in the history in Safari, the Finder, switch beetween pictures in iPhoto, between chats in iChat…
It may take a little practice to get used to, but I love the move !
And you don’t need two fingers to scroll vertically, it’s not a laptop trackpad
You only need one, like on any other mouse.
Cheers
I wonder why they made horizontal scrolling a two-finger swipe instead of just one. It certainly sounded awkward when I read the description and your explanation confirms it.
The right click on the Mighty Mouse wasn’t reliable because you were forced to LIFT the finger from the left button to be able to press the right. Try this: Place both fingers over the two buttons, now without lifting any of them, do a left click. It will work. Try the right click. It won’t work. That is what I HATED on the Mighty Mouse.
I mostly agree with your comments. 2-finger swipe – eh. what I don’t like is that in the first week I twice had the mouse lose contact with the iMac. Not having setup some magic key combination to get to some place where I could sync I had restart. boo.
Opposite for me… The old Mighty Mouse never had problems with right and left clicks – the reason I despised it is because the scroll wheel lasted one hour before becoming too gunked up to use.
This fancy new Mega Mouse or whatever the fuck it’s called cannot handle right clicks – I have about a 60% success rate. It’s all academic as it’s now listed on eBay and I am happily using my trusty Logitech…
