I’ve been happy with Vector Designer (http://www.tweakersoft.com/vectordesigner/) for vector graphics on OS X. It’s pretty cheap too.

If you are going to resort to ASCII, I would recomend ASCII-Edit (http://simonhaertel.de/ascii-edit)

However, if you are going to stick to vector graphics, I would recomend Lineform.
