Hey, sorry about pushing the crap that is Flex on everyone. I've just had a really painful reverse bowel movement and we all know how disorienting that can be. My apologies.

Hi Michael,

"Flex is great and expensive"

This is a common misconception about Flex. There are commercial products related to Flex like Flex Builder and LiveCycle Data Services but these are optional. You can build very sophisticated RIAs with the open source and free products like the open source Flex SDK and BlazeDS. I used Vim as my primary IDE for Flex for nearly 4 years until Adobe released Flex Builder for Linux. Also Flex Builder is free for students and educators.

Eric, Flex Builder 3 has not been released yet. The currently available Flex Builder 2 is $250, although it costs more if you need the Charting package, which most people do not. If you buy FB2 now, you can download the stable FB3 beta for free, and when it expires you can upgrade to the release version for $99 (Standard edition), or $499 (Professional edition).

I agree it's a tad confusing, but despite the "Professional" moniker, the standard edition provides everything you need for enterprise development.

Well, i really enjoyed reading Chet's blog. I am hoping that this will be good for him. But for a java developer, leaving a platform is not as easy as it sounds. I will read his blog to see his experiences.
Maybe i am wrong and Adobe really needed good engineers. i remember when i was really into Mozilla project back in 2002, one of the top developers (Dave Hyatt if i recall) silently hired by Apple and started to work in the heart of a rival browser when nobody expected.. At the end Mozilla prevailed. Who knows, Swing may be too.

Michael, the Flex sdk is free. If you need a specialized IDE, FlashDevelop is open source free, and Adobe's own Flex Builder costs $250. What about it is expensive?

Yes asfina you're right. A guy as passionate as Chet can only be attracted by more money, and since he was underpaid at Sun... Come on!!! For me it just serves as another demonstration that Sun has missed the train, and Sun engineers are in the best position to understand that. When you're passionate about technology, you go where it's fun and useful. Congratulations Chet! Move on guys, Flex is great.
