Java is the New COBO…ZAP!

What do COBOL programmers think when they get on The Internets and read that Java is the New COBOL?

Java is the New COBOL

Damn…take a close look at those death rays…

Oh snap! There can be only one! (COBOL)

Dan Lewis Says:

Ruby’s not going anywhere! I mean, it’s going somewhere, er, yeah.

BTW Ruby’s death rays are like 20x more powerful than Java’s, I mean COBOL’s.

LOLOL!!11!

afsina Says:

sorry Dan, not funny

Matt Taylor Says:

Also, pink is the new black.

Dean Says:

God, I miss Tuxedo .

Jacques Says:

Funny, pretty funny!

Java is the new Cobol and Ruby is the new Pascal and Python is the new Lisp. I am sure about that.

Eric Burke Says:

Anybody crack (this part of) the code?

teh Says:

well eric.. there is a pun for Galactica right?

Tom Says:

The premise is flawed, cobol programmers don’t get on the internet because they barely know how to use pc’s; and if they do, they work at large financial companies that don’t allow them access to the internet. What would a cobol programmer find on the internet to aid their work? Answer: nothing. When was the last time you saw a cobol tutorial?

Eric Burke Says:

Yes, yes yes…the first draft said something like…”We’re all lucky COBOL programmers don’t know how to use the Internets. They’d be pretty pissed to know how we talk about them…”

So has anyone cracked this part of the code yet???

Jesus Says:

> Ruby is the new Pascal and Python is the new Lisp.

You got that the wrong way around.

Jacques Says:

Or vice-versa. :-D

Some Guy Says:

for this part of the code.. I got something very wrong (I’m sure)
I get these words:
Swing development switching when frequently easier from

Which could be rearranged to:
development frequently easier when switching from Swing

kind of funny though

PERFORM 550-LAUGH-ROUTINE.
ADD +1 TO LOVE-IT-COUNTER.
MOVE ‘:-)’ TO EMOTICON-OUTPUT.
DISPLAY EMOTICON-OUTPUT.
STOP RUN.

(First : Sorry, crappy english is crappy since it’s not my first language)
I am a 20 years old girl studying in business informatics and I am learning learning COBOL. All the babyboomers who know COBOL are going to retire soon, leaving a huge demand for COBOL programmers. Every year there are companies and government agencies calling the teachers here to know if there still are newly graduated programmers who don’t have jobs yet who would be interested in getting a job programming COBOL. Sad fact is that last year, there was only 3 students who graduated and they got jobs very quickly so they couldn’t send anyone.

COBOL is not going to disappear anywhere soon. There was too much money invested in making custom programs in companies and government agencies and it would cost too much to renew the whole systems with a new language that is nowhere near as effective as COBOL.

And no… Java is not the next COBOL. Both languages don’t even compare.
