Why I Don’t Read JDJ

Remember the good ol’ days when Java Developer’s Journal was an actual printed magazine? Wow, have things ever changed at “The World’s Leading Java Resource”:

JDJ

Although not shown here, when you first visit the page, a giant Flash advertisement obscures most of the screen. Then, after you close that ad, the video on the right starts playing — with sound. It’s like a horrible MySpace page. And I thought blogs were bad.

I’m probably being too generous by saying there are “only” 8 ads…those three links above Ad #3 are probably paid links, as two of the three take you to sites that require registration before you can view the content. Making paid ads look like legitimate content is a dirty trick.

The question is…do all of these advertisements work? Am I stupid for limiting my blog to a single ad? Could I double…triple…quadruple my money?

I agree 100%! The JDJ website is the single worst Java resource on the web for the simple reason that you never get to the content because of all the damn adds!

Matt Says:

Yeah, surely JDJ hurt themselves with this? It screams “SPAMTRAP” from the moment you hit the front page.

Kris Says:

Completly agree! JDJ webpage is unaccessible and the pdf version is not much better!

lol, try using firefox and plugins to block flash and some adblocker (if you hate JS there is also no-script plugin, i dont mind JS). i used to not mind ads, but when they start using agressive flash, JS and SOUND i stopped visiting those pages, that was before i start using firefox :)

Totally agreed. It’s been like that for years at JDJ though, and really every other Sys-Con property is the same too. Completely lame, and I won’t visit any of their sites because of it. In my case at least, they are’nt quadrupling their money with more ads, because I won’t even click on a Sys-Con link anymore.

And, as a previous TSS interview with Hani noted when this same subject came up, I don’t think you or I (or the other commenters here) are alone in our consternation:

“What do you think of Syscon JDJ?”

His response:

“It’s a good ad. It’s a pretty ad. I have managed successfully, and I don’t think many people can claim this, to actually unsubscribe from everything they have and I don’t even get the free magazine anymore and I am very proud, it took a lot of effort.”
